Students make electric appliances operable via sms
By   siliconindia news bureau
Sunday,07 February 2010, 19:00 hrs

Bangalore: Your electrical appliances at home can soon be controlled by a simple SMS, thanks to a new 'low cost device' developed by the students at Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.

The device, which was developed by Abdullah Azhar and Kamal Gupta, both final year B.Tech students of Department of Electronics, will enable users to operate electrical appliances at their home from anywhere in the world at any time at a very low cost, a college spokesman said.

According to him, existing technologies for home automation require internet, Bluetooth and wi-fi systems, which are comparatively expensive, reports PTI. The device has also won the second prize at the international exhibition of 'Electrical and Industrial Electronics' held in Mumbai recently.

Dear Abdullah & Kama.Assalamwalaikum. I am a old timer ALIG ( 1953-56)> I am proud and happy to know of your achievement. Surely it has wide applications. One I readily perceive is the Remote Operation. I am very fond of these innovative acheivements and can foresee development of new applications. Be patient and wise. These are the times when we are striving to settle down in a new planet. Therefore every achievement has a place. Donot be overjoyed. I have myself developed a Fireproofing Fire Shield so that in the eventof a fire occurance, the Emegency Shut down valves could be operated from a remote location, when the intense heat in a installation like refinery prevents all manual operations.

52: I got in touch with the guys behind this & trust me, their project is much bigger than what it appears from the article. Their system can control more than 6000 rooms/flats/floors (please note, a single system can do this) & in each room they can control around 16 devices. And for all this, no additional wiring is required between the rooms in the home. This makes it a completely wireless system. Further, the cost of the project is a fraction of other technologies existing in market. These students must be congratulated for this feat. Keep it up guys...

103: This is a VERY VERY OLD project. Had featured in an issue of EFY(electronics for you) magazine somewhere in 2006. If these students have done the project independently then appreciable else its a shame that students flick the ONLY major project u do in the whole of ur engineering.

104: Excellent. Kudos to your hardwork. Now formalize the idea a little more, productionalize it, and mass produce it. Innovation is the key to India's success. Really happy for you guys.
